Studio Chizu's official YouTube channel today posted a 60-second trailer for Mamoru Hosoda's upcoming new anime feature Mirai no Mirai (Mirai of The Future)/MIRAI. This is the third film from the studio co-founded by himself and ex-Madhouse producer Yuichiro Saito, following Wolf Children(2012) and The Boy and The Beast(2015). As with the previous two films, Hosoda also serves as original strory creator and screenplay writer. The film is set to be released in Japan on July 20, distributed by toho.
The clip introduces the story as: "Kun, a spoiled little boy. He meets Mirai, his little sister who travels back in time from the future. Thus begins the little big brother's fantasy-filled adventure. Worlds beyond imagination. First Experience. Many Encounters. Where do they find themeselves after transcending time and space? Why did Mirai-chan come from the future?"
“Mirai of the Future” is the anime director’s first project in three years, and he wrote the screenplay based on his own story ideas.
Hosoda previously won the Special Distinction award at Annecy in 2007 with “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.” “The Boy and the Beast” was invited to the Work in Progress sessions in 2015 before it returned to the festival for an open-air screening in the following year.
Meanwhile, Kosaka’s “Okko’s Inn” is about Oriko Seki, aka Okko, a sixth-grader who loses her parents. She moves in with her grandmother who runs an “onsen” hot spring inn and starts working as an apprentice as its future proprietress while she strives to handle quirky guests.
The film will also reveal a story between Okko and her parents, which is untold in the original manga series and its TV anime adaptation. It will be released nationwide in September.
Japanese anime won big at Annecy last year. Masaaki Yuasa’s “Lu Over the Wall” won the top Cristal for a Feature award, while Sunao Katabuchi’s “In This Corner of the World” was given a Jury Award.
